A personal gift starts with permission, not a punchline
A joke can make a conversation lighter, but an intimate gift should not surprise someone with embarrassment or an unwanted expectation.
Ask whether the category is welcome
A recipient may enjoy humour while not wanting an intimate object. Ask privately and give room for a direct no. Do not make refusal the joke or imply that a person who declines lacks a sense of fun.
Consider who will see it
Discuss delivery, wrapping and where the gift will be opened. Avoid turning the recipient into an audience for a public reveal. Privacy preferences belong to them, including whether anyone else should know what was given.
Keep the object ordinary to own
If a product is wanted, check material, manual, seller and return restrictions. Include useful order information. No gift creates a duty to use it, tell a story about it or reward the giver. Thoughtfulness survives an exchange or a change of mind.

Before you decide
Would the recipient still feel respected if the joke did not land or the gift were declined?
